We are approaching a crucial time in the short history of the Trust with a need to get back on track with the original main purpose: To establish a long-term business partnership between a strong supporters’ organisation and a forward looking club that materialises in full community status.
A Trust Development Plan is in the draft stage and its implementation has been put on hold until a number of actions agreed by Supporters Direct and in-post Chairman Ian Stephenson have been completed. These include confirmation of formal lines of communication with SD through the Chairman, taking legal advice on recent events on the delivery of our future constitution, completion of a report to the FSA (Financial Services Authority) and the continuation of a proper democratic process under Trust Rules to achieve a fully quorate Board. There will shortly be an announcement on that process.

Board Meeting & Steering Group Meeting Minutes
This is therefore an appropriate time to demonstrate that the Trust has always wanted to embrace a policy of openness and transparency and to show how various actions were arrived at, the Minutes of the Steering Group Meetings 2010-2011 and the Full Board 2011 are now being made available on our website.

Milestones
Main points with further details from the Minutes:
September 2010 Formation of Steering Group & Appointment of Officers
January 2011 Presentation of TIH Executive Review to WRLFC 2010 *
January 2011 TIH Launch & Members Night
March 2011 1st AGM & Election of Full Board Members
April 2011 Sponsorship of U23’s Reserve Grade Squad
June 2011 Draft Development Plan In Production

Executive Review
*The Chairman Ian Stephenson produced a copyrighted report (with a nominally estimated value of £2,000) for the Trust and this was used as the basis of the presentation to the Club Board (an example of openly sharing information). Included in the Review was a Memorandum of Understanding with two features: A system for recording the time spent by volunteers doing work for the club; a proposal for acquiring 5% of the shares each year and over 5 years. The documents were for further discussion and negotiation. A summary of that Review is also now available on our website.

Development Plan
Many of you will have seen a recently e-mailed Postal Ballot – it is also on our website – where, under the heading ‘Development Potential’, there was a hint of the main thrust of the Plan – to finalise a scheme that with a host of sponsors results in the emergence of a credible squad building programme. This currently is the Plan’s main theme, but further suggestions from members would be welcomed.

Membership & Postal Address
A reminder that Memberships will soon be due for renewal and new members are welcome. Download the Membership Form from the website and send to the Trust’s postal address, which is:125 Queen Street, Whitehaven, Cumbria, CA28 7QF.
This is also the Registered Office address for the Whitehaven Supporters Co-operative Limited.

During the months since the AGM in March I and a few Board Members have been working towards a Development Plan to take the Trust forward. The release of a draft has been delayed because some Members were struggling to make a contribution and have resigned. As a consequence there will be some changes to the structure – more details to be announced – and the Board will press on with the completion of the draft Plan; the timetable for publication is about three months.

In the meantime, I can reveal that the essential theme of the Plan will be, ‘A Sense Of Community’, focusing on those aspects of rugby league throughout West Cumbria that can have an impact on the game for the future. From our continuing sponsorship of the U23’s squad – we have already seen the results of players moving up and making their mark in the first team – input into a squad builder programme, linking up with our amateur clubs and promotion of juniors’ activities.

Important Request

There are two significant phases for which your contribution is requested:

1.Our approach to strengthening the Trust is to appoint people with skills and ability to apply integrity and professionalism to achieve results; we would like to hear from any of our members who feel they have something to offer (see below ***).

2.In order to implement all facets of the Development Plan we will have to make sure we have the strength in depth to carry them forward; we therefore aim to establish Working Groups made up of enthusiastic supporters and invite ALL members to get involved.

Rochdale Hornets, the only supporter owned club in professional rugby league will be hosting its second Cooperative Day on Sunday July 10th and is encouraging coop members and rugby league supporters alike to turn out as Hornets aim to draw a record crowd of 10,000 to the game.

The event is a celebration of the cooperative values that Hornets shares with a number of businesses across the UK and further afield and will bring to an end the country wide celebration of Coop Fortnight. The event will also be supporting Mencap and for every ticket sold a donation will be made to the charity.

There will be entertainment throughout the afternoon and a chance to discover what cooperatives are all about, culminating in the main event when Hornets take on Workington Town in a crunch Championship One fixture at 3.00pm at Hornets home ground, Spotland Stadium.

The match will this year be sponsored by Supporters Direct, the umbrella organisation for supporters trusts in the UK and across Europe and Laura Harrison, Rugby League Development Manager said of the event: “Hornets are a fine example of how supporter ownership can work in rugby league and they’ve really embraced the cooperative values that all of our trusts share. It should be a great event.”

Tickets are priced at just £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.

For more information about Rochdale Hornets visit www.hornetsrugbyleague.co.uk and for more information on Supporters Direct visit www.supporters-direct.coop
